Today, more people are looking
for gentle, but effective, remedies that they can use on themselves
or on their families without the harsh side effects of over the
counter drugs. And for some, the practice of homeopathic medicine
presents a needed solution.
Homeopathy sees disease as an
energy imbalance, a disturbance to the body's life force. It works by
stimulating the body's own healing mechanisms. The techniques used
for treatment are based on the belief that the body is self-healing
and that the symptoms that are expressed in illness constitute the
body's attempt to restore balance, or homeostatis.
Homeopathy
is accepted in many parts of the world, especially in Europe. In
fact, the royal family of Great Britain is treated by a homeopathic
physician. India uses homeopathy within the medical establishment,
and it is used for treatment in hospitals and clinics.
Principles
The body has the remarkable ability to protect itself from
many types of ailments. Complications arise when the body's immune
system is weakened, allowing illness to gain a stronghold within our
body. The illness will likely affect the weakest link which causes a
susceptibility to disease at this specific area. Homeopathy attempts
to reclaim our health by strengthening our immune system; in doing
so, this will eliminate the disease and allow the body to heal
itself.
Homeopathic remedies are chosen by the characteristic
of the symptom, such as a throbbing headache, vomiting, or anxiety.
These symptoms are warning signs that something is wrong. When we
experience the warning signs, we need to address them immediately. In
other words, it’s important to be attentive to the signals
expressed by the body.
Homeopathic Remedies are based on three prescription principles:
The Law of Similars: To be effective, you have to cure the illness with a similar remedy.
The Minimum Dose Principal: To be effective, the solutions have to be very weak.
The Single Remedy Principle: Despite the symptoms, you have only one remedy to be administered at a time.
Homeopathy's History
Discovered
The roots of homeopathy can be traced back to
ancient times; however, the principles of homeopathy were developed
in the late 1700’s by Samuel Hahnemann. He was a German
physician and chemist. Hahnemann was becoming increasingly frustrated
by the medical practices of his day. For example, he found the
practice of bloodletting (letting the patient bleed in attempt to
cure them) ineffective and often dangerous to the patient.
During
his research, Hahnemann found a document that discussed the use of
Peruvian bark to cure malaria. The document suggested that the
bitterness of the herb was responsible for its healing properties.
Hahnemann wasn’t satisfied with this answer and so he conducted
his own experiments and executed enough doses to study the effects.
What he observed was fascinating. The same bark that was used to
treat the person with the fever could cause a similar reaction in a
healthy person. This was his first observation of the basic
principles of homeopathy.
Following this research,Hahnemann,
and his colleagues,, studied the effects of other medicinal
substances on the human body. Hahnemann’s further research in
chemistry made homeopathic doses safe without changing their curative
effects. He later published his findings in the book titled The
Organon of Medicine.
Recognizing Symptoms
Homeopathy is based on a close observation of the symptom or
illness. The clearer and more specific the symptom is, the easier it
will be to choose the correct remedy, and the better its
effectiveness.
What To Expect
Homeopathic
remedies work very quickly (On a personal note, I’ve used them
myself when I experienced vomiting and found a particular homeopathic
remedy to be extremely effective). According to the teachings of
homeopathy the more severe an illness is, the faster a remedy may
work. It is important to note, however, that homeopathy cannot be
used to reverse permanent physical problems, disorders, and
illnesses.
